Mary
Johnston is a registered nurse who became licensed as a Professional
Counselor in 1983 and as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1997, by
the Virginia Board of Licensed Professional Counselors, Marriage and
Family Therapists, and Substance Abuse Professionals. The American
Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists has
certified her as an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the
University of California, Northridge, California, in 1966, with
majors in English and theater. She earned her Associate Degree in
Nursing from Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach, Virginia,
in 1972, and her Master of Science in Education, with a major in
counseling from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, in 1980.
She began her counseling experience in 1978, as a co-therapist
using the Masters and Johnson approach to sex therapy. After she
earned her counseling degree in 1980, she functioned as an
independent practitioner with a focus on sex therapy, marital
issues, and womens issues (e.g., PMS and menopause). She recognizes
that fear, ignorance, guilt, and shame are primary components of
sexual dysfunction which can inhibit behavioral changes related to
increased intimacy. Mary Johnston works part-time for Parker, Schlichter &
Associates, where she provides counseling to individual adults and
couples.

Bob Newman is a Clinical Social Worker.
He earned his Bachelor of Science
from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, in 1977.
After working as a mental health worker in private psychiatric
hospitals, he returned to academia and earned his M.S.W. at

technician on inpatient psychiatric units of private psychiatric
hospitals, he worked with children,
adolescents, and adults. From his understanding of the
difficulties of hospitalized psychiatric
patients, Mr. Newman brings a unique perspective to his practice of
clinical social work. He relates with clients and patients
respectfully, directly, honestly, and without use of jargon or
psychobabble, with a therapeutic orientation derived from principles
of reality therapy, rational-emotive, cognitive-behavioral, and
structural family therapy. He focuses on
problem-solving and the development of coping skills which will
serve clients well throughout their lives. In addition to his
